Method:

• Scanning: Scanning is done on an IP basis, i.e., I do not scan domains/fully qualified domains (FQDN), but IP addresses. By doing so I avoid to scan the same IP address twice or more because of multiple domains that share the same IP address.
• I try to focus on subnets of hosting companies that offer dedicated servers to their customers. Usually these dedicated servers come with only one IP address so the percentage of mail servers spreading across multiple IP addresses is low.
• Results: I try to list the most popular mail servers in the results table. Other mail servers with a minor role are merged under "Unknown / Other". "Unknown / Other" also contains the mail servers that do not tell what software they are running. Thus, it is possible that (e.g.) a mail server running Postfix is listed under "Unknown / Other" because it does not tell that it is running Postfix.
